Romeo and Juliet 2010
A contemporary adaptation of Romeo and Juliet based on William Shakespeare’s tragedy. The play premiered at the Malá scéna STU theatre in December 2010, followed by several successful repeat performances, including productions on theatre stages in Nitra and Levoča.
At the heart of the play is an intergenerational conflict. The story has been moved into the present day, and the blind are not only the actors, but also the characters of the tragedy themselves, with the exception of Juliet’s Nurse and the character of Shakespeare. The action is guided by William Shakespeare as the author. He is not merely a narrator, but also the playwright and director staging the production. At times, the characters attempt to live lives of their own, forcing the author to respect their choices and alter the course of the story he originally intended.
The characters are dressed in contemporary costume, while Shakespeare alone appears in period black clothing and at the age at which he wrote the famous tragedy. The scenography is very simple, dynamic, and symbolic. In the most emotionally intense moments, Romeo and Juliet sing.
Cast: Eva Baraníková, Danka Macková, Kristína Prekopová, Jakub Gabriel, Stanislav Sokol, Peter Zbranek, and Jozef Pražmári.
