Tea at the Senator's
Ivan Stodola’s play Tea at the Senator’s is set almost a hundred years ago and captures the early beginnings of democracy in our region. Since democracy was something unfamiliar to the Slovak people at the time, it took newly enfranchised citizens a while to learn how to navigate this previously unknown political system.
That is also why we can notice certain flaws in the behaviour of the political representatives of that era—shortcomings that have no place in a mature society and are now long considered things of the past. Still, we need not judge our predecessors too harshly. After all, they did not have behind them decades of experience that might have allowed them to become the kind of proud statesmen who lead our country today.
So let us look back at the past, at moments both cheerful and less cheerful, and appreciate all the more the development our society has undergone over the course of nearly a hundred years.
Running time: 90 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission.
The production is the result of a second collaboration between the Slovak National Theatre Drama Company and Divadlo Zrakáč.
The rehearsal process and staging of the production were financially supported from public funds by the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic.
