The Cheeky Eyeless
People with disabilities are most often portrayed in films and literature as innocent victims, and that applies to blind people as well. Someone might therefore imagine that they spend their days simply sitting and suffering. But the life of a blind or partially sighted person can be just as funny, absurd, fulfilling, or embarrassing as anyone else’s. They want to love, work, enjoy life, and sometimes behave like complete jerks - shameless characters can be found among blind people too.
Daniel could certainly be considered one of them. He has no hesitation in playing on women’s emotions with a touching story about losing his sight, all in order to get them into bed. He makes nothing of his blindness and lives life to the fullest. He performs in hotels, seduces women, and likes to boast about his conquests to his friends.
Anna, by contrast, cannot come to terms with losing her sight. She sees it as an injustice and no longer sees any meaning in her life - quite literally. She tries to find comfort in God, but cannot overcome her own bitterness. Could these two people ever understand one another? What begins as a foolish idea after a few glasses of wine eventually changes the way both of them see their own lives.
The Cheeky Eyeless is an absurd comedy about the lives of blind people, created in collaboration between the Slovak National Theatre and Divadlo Zrakáč.
Running time: 1 hour 30 minutes, no intermission.
The production is suitable for audiences aged 15 and up.
